How to Safeguard Your Assets Against Fraud

By Dylan Rodrigues

As more of our financial lives move online, protecting your wealth is no longer only about choosing the right investments or having adequate insurance. Fraudsters are constantly finding new ways to target individuals through phishing emails, fake investment opportunities, identity theft and increasingly sophisticated scams.

While no one can eliminate the risk of fraud completely, developing good financial habits and putting a few safeguards in place can make it much harder for criminals to access your money or personal information.

  1. Protect Your Personal and Financial Information

Personal information can be extremely valuable to fraudsters. Identity numbers, banking details, passwords and even seemingly harmless information can be used to impersonate you or gain access to your accounts.

Avoid sharing sensitive information through email, SMS or messaging platforms unless you are certain who you are dealing with. Use strong, unique passwords for important financial accounts and enable multi-factor authentication wherever possible.

Be particularly cautious when someone contacts you unexpectedly and asks you to confirm personal information, click on a link or provide a one-time PIN (OTP).

  1. Be Sceptical of Unsolicited Investment Opportunities

Investment scams often rely on urgency and the promise of unusually high returns. You may be told that an opportunity is available for a limited time or that you need to transfer money quickly to avoid missing out.

Before investing, take time to understand the investment, the company offering it and where your money will actually be held. Be cautious of anyone promising guaranteed high returns with little or no risk. Legitimate investments involve risk, and pressure to act immediately should be treated with caution.

  1. Verify Before You Act

Fraudsters can impersonate banks, financial advisers, investment companies and even people you know. A message may look legitimate while directing you to fraudulent banking details or a fake website.

If you receive an unexpected request involving money, independently verify it before taking action. Rather than using the contact details or links contained in the message, contact the person or organisation through a trusted number or website you already know.

This is particularly important when banking details suddenly change or when you are asked to make an unusual payment.

  1. Monitor Your Finances Regularly

Checking your bank accounts, credit facilities and investment statements regularly can help you identify suspicious activity sooner.

Review transactions and statements rather than assuming everything is correct. If you notice an unfamiliar transaction, unexpected change to an account or communication you do not recognise, investigate it promptly.

Activate SMS notifications for any bank or credit card transactions.

It is also worthwhile checking your credit profile periodically. Unexpected accounts or credit applications in your name may be an early indication of identity theft.

  1. Have a Plan if Something Goes Wrong

Even careful individuals can become victims of sophisticated fraud. If you suspect that your banking or investment information has been compromised, act quickly.

Contact the relevant financial institution, change compromised passwords and report suspicious transactions immediately. Keep records of correspondence and any evidence relating to the incident. The sooner you respond, the better your chances of limiting further financial damage.

Final Thoughts

Protecting your wealth requires more than making good investment decisions. It also means protecting the information and accounts that provide access to your assets.

Stay cautious, verify unusual requests and regularly monitor your finances. A few extra minutes spent checking before clicking, sharing information or transferring money could prevent years of hard work and accumulated wealth from falling into the wrong hands.
